A Survey of the Belarusian Transport and Logistics Services Market
According to the results of the study, conducted between from April and to June 2008, AsstrA is the most recognizable company in Belarus’ transport and logistics sector. This is one of the most essential indicators of the company’s market share.
The agreement for the market research services was made with the Indecom company, Belarus’ largest marketing services company. Indecom’s main business includes provision of qualitative and quantitative marketing research and consulting services.
The purpose of the survey was to obtain information about the transport and logistics services market in Belarus and AsstrA’s market position.
The following data were obtained as a result of the study:
- the size of the domestic and international freight market
- the size of the market by type of logistics service
- the size of exports/imports by district in Belarus
- the state of the 3PL segment of the freight market
- AsstrA’s competitive environment
The study has shown that the intensity of the use of international logistical companies’ services varies depending on the part of the country. The services of these companies are the most used in the central part of Belarus: Minsk and, to a greater extent, Minsk District. The largest number of customers for international freight services is located in Brest and Gomel District. The needs for different modes of transportation vary with the size of the organization and the intensity of shipments.
On the average, organizations seek the services of companies providing international freight forwarding and transportation one to three times per month. About a third of the organizations use the services of transport and logistics companies more intensively, once a week or more.
The survey found that road vehicles were the most frequently used mode of transport, with 60.7 percent of all organizations indicating that they used trucking services, without checking the other modes of transportation.
Russia-Belarus is both the leading import and export route. Ukraine-Belarus is the second most used export route, although its share of imports is somewhat smaller. Germany and Poland rank next in importance in terms of imports/exports.

The survey dealt with the 3PL services market, as AsstrA is a 3PL operator. The most important advantage of the 3PL system is its comprehensive nature which enables consumers to use different types of service provided by the same contractor, thus minimizing the time and improving the quality of their logistics. The demand for these services in the Belarusian market is at the formation stage. Companies established in the following areas are the largest users of 3PL services: Minsk District (24 percent), Gomel District (22 percent) and the city of Minsk (20 percent).
The data obtained in the course of the survey will be used by AsstrA for improving and expanding its package of services to take into account the current market requirements. Flexible response to the dynamically changing environment will help the company to reach even a higher market position.
