Belarus: Decrease of tariffs to stimulate freight transport

From the beginning of May Belarus Railways reduced the tariffs on transit shipment. The measure will be implemented for the freight transported to and from seaports and land border checkpoints of the Kaliningrad oblast.

According to Railway Insider, the decision was taken with a view to preserving the freight traffic in the Kaliningrad direction. For example, the tariffs on transportation of coal and coke were cut down by 10%, that of gas condensate, distillate of gas condensate and casinghead gasoline by 15%, grain 12%, plywood by 20%, vehicles by 25%.

The Belarus Railways also decided on an additional reduction of transport tariffs for farm produce. - The tariffs on containerized shipment remain at the level of 2008. On the request of the Transcontainer Company, an additional coefficient of 0.8 was imposed on transportation of cargoes in 40-foot containers, which is down 20% over 2008,- declared Alexander Yevsyuk, chief of the marketing and transport logistics department of the company.

The Belarus Railways addressed the Lithuanian railways with a proposal to introduce equal discounts and also put forward an initiative to reduce the tariffs on a parity basis (approximately by 10-15%) on the transportation of metals, ferrous alloys, fertilizers and oil products.
